To use dates as the index of a DataFrame in Pandas, you can either:
use Pandas'
date_range(~)
method, which returns aDatetimeIndex
.use
to_datetime(~)
to convert an existing index toDatetimeIndex
.
Creating a new DataFrame with DatetimeIndex
To create a DataFrame with DatetimeIndex
:
index_date = pd.date_range(start="2020-12-25", end="2020-12-27")df = pd.DataFrame({"A":[2,3,4],"B":[4,5,6]}, index=index_date)df
A B2020-12-25 2 42020-12-26 3 52020-12-27 4 6
Here, the data type of the index is:
type(df.index)
pandas.core.indexes.datetimes.DatetimeIndex
Converting index to datetime
Consider the following DataFrame:
df = pd.DataFrame({"A":[2,3],"B":[4,5]}, index=["2020-12-25", "2020-12-27"])df
A B2020-12-25 2 42020-12-27 3 5
Here, the index is of type Index
:
type(df.index)
pandas.core.indexes.base.Index
To change the index to DatetimeIndex
:
df.index = pd.to_datetime(df.index)df
A B2020-12-25 2 42020-12-27 3 5
Now, index is of type DatetimeIndex
:
type(df.index)
pandas.core.indexes.datetimes.DatetimeIndex
