The most_common(~) method within the collections module, returns a list of the most common n elements and their respective counts within a Counter object.

Parameters

1. n | number | optional

Return the top n most common elements in the Counter object.

Return value

A list of the n most common elements and their respective counts. If multiple elements have equal counts, they are returned in the order first encountered.

Examples

To return a new list with two most common elements from my_list:

from collections import Counter
my_list = ['a', 'b', 'b', 'c', 'c','c']

occurrences = Counter(my_list) #Initialize Counter object
new_list = occurrences.most_common(2)
print(new_list)
[('c', 3), ('b', 2)]
