collections' popitem(~) method removes a key-value pair from an ordered dictionary and returns it.

Parameters

1. last | boolean | optional

If True pairs are returned in LIFO order, if False pairs are returned in FIFO order. Defaults to True.

Return value

The removed key-value pair.

Examples

To remove and return the last inserted key-value pair (LIFO):

from collections import OrderedDict
od = OrderedDict([('key1', 1), ('key2', 2), ('key3', 3)])
od.popitem(last=True)
('key3', 3)

To remove and return the first inserted key-value pair (FIFO):

from collections import OrderedDict
od = OrderedDict([('key1', 1), ('key2', 2), ('key3', 3)])
od.popitem(last=False)
('key1', 1)
