Python's in
membership operator checks if a value exists in a sequence or not.
Syntax
x in y
Where:
x
: the value we are checking for.
y
: the sequence that we are checking for the value in.
Examples
String
To check whether 'art'
exists in 'artist'
:
'art' in 'artist'
True
To check whether 'k'
exists in 'table'
:
'k' in 'table'
False
List
To check whether 'orange'
is in the list fruits
:
fruits = ['apple', 'banana', 'pear', 'orange']'orange' in fruits
True
To check whether 'grape'
is in the list fruits
:
fruits = ['apple', 'banana', 'pear', 'orange']'grape' in fruits
False
Dictionary
For dictionaries, in
tests whether the value exists as a key in the dictionary or not.
To check whether 'height'
is a key in dictionary bob
:
bob = {'age': 23, 'height': 180, 'hobby': 'surfing', 'fav_movie':'Forrest Gump'}
'height' in bob
True
To check whether 180
is a key in dictionary bob
:
bob = {'age': 23, 'height': 180, 'hobby': 'surfing', 'fav_movie':'Forrest Gump'}
180 in bob
False
We obtain False
as 180
is a value in the dictionary bob
rather than a key.
