Python's not in membership operator checks if a value does not exist in a sequence or not.

Syntax

x not in y

Where:

x: the value we are checking for.

y: the sequence for which we are checking whether the value does not exist in or not.

Examples

String

To check whether 'pond' does not exist in 'poncho':

'pond' not in 'poncho'
True

As the string 'pond' does not indeed exist within 'poncho' we obtain True.

'pond' not in 'pondering'
False

List

To check whether 'strawberry shortcake' does not exist in the list desserts:

desserts = ['apple crumble', 'banana cake', 'ice cream', 'tiramisu']
'strawberry shortcake' not in desserts
True

To check whether 'tiramisu' does not exist in the list desserts:

desserts = ['apple crumble', 'banana cake', 'ice cream', 'tiramisu']
'tiramisu' not in desserts
False

Dictionary

For dictionaries, not in tests whether the value does not exist as a key in the dictionary or not.

To check whether 'fav_song' is not a key in dictionary emma:

emma = {'age': 21, 'height': 165, 'hobby': 'drawing', 'fav_movie':'End Game'}

'fav_song' not in emma

emma = {'age': 23, 'height': 165, 'hobby': 'surfing', 'fav_movie':'Forrest Gump'}
