To add padding to a column of strings, use the Series' str.pad(~)
method.
As an example, consider the following DataFrame:
df = pd.DataFrame({"A":["aa", "bbb", "cccc", "ddddd"]})df
A0 aa1 bbb2 cccc3 ddddd
Left-padding
To pad the left side of each string with character "Z"
until a width of 4
is reached:
df["A"].str.pad(width=4, fillchar="Z") # side="left"
0 ZZaa1 Zbbb2 cccc3 dddddName: A, dtype: object
Notice how strings that are longer than the specified width are left as is.
Right-padding
To pad the right-side instead, just set side="right"
like so:
df["A"].str.pad(width=4, fillchar="Z", side="right")
0 aaZZ1 bbbZ2 cccc3 dddddName: A, dtype: object
Padding both ends
To pad both ends, set side="both"
like so:
df["A"].str.pad(width=4, fillchar="Z", side="both")
0 ZaaZ1 bbbZ2 cccc3 dddddName: A, dtype: object
