We can add a default column value in MySQL using the DEFAULT
constraint.
Example
To create a table with the default value for age
as 20
:
CREATE TABLE students ( name VARCHAR(30), age INT DEFAULT 20);
To insert a record without specifying the age
, and then print the results:
INSERT INTO students (name) VALUES ('bob');SELECT * FROM students;
+------+------+| name | age |+------+------+| bob | 20 |+------+------+
We can see that students for whom we do not provide an age
value will automatically be inserted as 20
years old.
