This can be done using syntax like the below:
ALTER TABLE table_name MODIFY column_name new_type;
Example
Given the following table about some student hobbies:
ID | Name | Age | Hobby |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Alex | 30 | Programming |
2 | Bob | 15 | Programming |
3 | Cathy | 20 | Swimming |
The table was created using the below piece of code:
CREATE TABLE info (name VARCHAR(20), age INT, hobby VARCHAR(20));
To update the column type of age
column to TINYINT NOT NULL
:
ALTER TABLE info MODIFY age TINYINT NOT NULL;
Query OK, 3 rows affected (0.03 sec)Records: 3 Duplicates: 0 Warnings: 0
To confirm the column type has been updated:
DESCRIBE info;
+-------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+| Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra |+-------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+| name | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | || age | tinyint | NO | | NULL | || hobby | varchar(20) | YES | | NULL | |+-------+-------------+------+-----+---------+-------+
We can see now that age
is type TINYINT
and does not accept NULL
values.
