Python's bool(~) constructor converts the input to a Boolean value using the standard truth testing procedure.

NOTE

The following are considered false in Python

  • None

  • False

  • Empty sequences and collections: [], (), {}, set(), "", range(0)

  • Zero of any numeric type: 0, 0.0, 0j

Parameters

1. any | any | optional

The value to be converted to a Boolean.

Return value

If the input value is false or is empty False is returned. If the input value is true True is returned.

Examples

Basic usage

To return a Boolean value:

bool()
False

As we do not provide any input, we return False.

To return a Boolean value:

bool(1)
True

As 1 evaluates to true, True is returned.

To return a Boolean value:

bool(0)
False

As 0 evaluates to false, False is returned.
