Python's str.expandtabs(~) method returns a string where the size of the tab '\t' has been adjusted to the provided tabsize. The default tabsize is 8.

NOTE

'\t' by itself is 8 characters.

'\t\t' is 16 characters.

'abc\tabc' is 3 characters 'abc', then the tab pushes it to 8 characters (adds 5 whitespace), then finally 'abc' adds another 3 characters to make the total string length 11.

Parameters

1. tabsize | number | optional

Number specifying the tabsize '\t'. Default is 8.

Return value

String with all '\t' fit to the specified tabsize.

Examples

To set the tabsize to 4:

x = 'Hi\t(*^_^*)'
x.expandtabs(4)
'Hi (*^_^*)'

Note that 2 whitespace characters are added after 'Hi' to bring the tabsize to 4.
