expand_more MySQL's SOUNDS LIKE
operator returns 1
if two string expressions sound alike or 0
if they do not.
Syntax
-- This is equivalent to SOUNDEX(expr1) = SOUNDEX(expr2)SELECT expr1 SOUNDS LIKE expr2;
Examples
Basic usage
To check whether 'sea'
sounds like 'see'
:
SELECT 'sea' SOUNDS LIKE 'see';
+-------------------------+| 'sea' SOUNDS LIKE 'see' |+-------------------------+| 1 |+-------------------------+
We can verify the above with the below:
SELECT SOUNDEX('sea') = SOUNDEX('see');
+---------------------------------+| SOUNDEX('sea') = SOUNDEX('see') |+---------------------------------+| 1 |+---------------------------------+
To check whether 'listen'
sounds like 'listener'
:
SELECT 'listen' SOUNDS LIKE 'listener';
+---------------------------------+| 'listen' SOUNDS LIKE 'listener' |+---------------------------------+| 0 |+---------------------------------+
The return value of 0
indicates that the two strings do not sound alike.
