MySQL's MONTH(~)
function returns the month for a given date or datetime.
Parameters
1. date/datetime
| date/datetime
The date/datetime on which the MONTH(~)
function should retrieve the month from.
Sample table - Students
student_id | fname | lname | day_enrolled | age | username |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Sky | Towner | 2015-12-03 | 17 | stowner1 |
2 | Ben | Davis | 2016-04-20 | 19 | bdavis2 |
3 | Travis | Apple | 2018-08-14 | 18 | tapple3 |
4 | Arthur | David | 2016-04-01 | 16 | adavid4 |
5 | Benjamin | Town | 2014-01-01 | 17 | btown5 |
The above sample table can be created using the code here.
Examples
Lets say we wanted to return the month that current students enrolled:
SELECT MONTH(day_enrolled)FROM students;
+---------------------+| MONTH(day_enrolled) |+---------------------+| 12 || 4 || 8 || 4 || 1 |+---------------------+5 rows in set (0.00 sec)
We can narrow our search to just students who were enrolled before June:
SELECT *FROM studentsWHERE MONTH(day_enrolled) < 6;
+------------+----------+-------+--------------+------+----------+| student_id | fname | lname | day_enrolled | age | username |+------------+----------+-------+--------------+------+----------+| 2 | Ben | Davis | 2016-04-20 | 19 | bdavis2 || 4 | Arthur | David | 2016-04-01 | 16 | adavid4 || 5 | Benjamin | Town | 2014-01-01 | 17 | btown5 |+------------+----------+-------+--------------+------+----------+3 rows in set (0.00 sec)
We do not necessarily have to select from a table:
SELECT MONTH('2020-04-12-06-05-55');
+------------------------------+| MONTH('2020-04-12-06-05-55') |+------------------------------+| 4 |+------------------------------+1 row in set (0.00 sec)
