Examples
String context
To return the current date and time as a string:

                    SELECT NOW();

            +---------------------+| NOW()               |+---------------------+| 2020-04-12 23:26:59 |+---------------------+

    Number context
To return the current date and time as a number:

                    SELECT NOW() + 0;

            +----------------+| NOW() + 0      |+----------------+| 20200412233419 |+----------------+

    Fractional seconds
To return the current date and time with microseconds up to 6 digits:

                    SELECT NOW(6);

            +----------------------------+| NOW(6)                     |+----------------------------+| 2020-04-16 16:00:57.659172 |+----------------------------+
