Numpy's empty(~)
method creates a new array with the arbitrary entries. This differs from Numpy's zeros(~)
method in that the zero(~)
method initializes the entries with 0, whereas nothing is initialized for the empty(~)
.
Performance-wise, empty()
is slightly faster than zeros()
since we don't initialize the entries at all.
Parameters
1. shape
| int
or array-like object
✜ The desired shape of the Numpy array. Providing an int
would return a one-dimensional flattened array.
2. dtype
link | string
or type
| optional
✜ The desired data type for the Numpy array. By default, dtype=numpy.float64
.
Return value
An array filled with arbitrary values, with the shape and type specified by the parameters.
Examples
Creating an one-dimensional Numpy array
np.empty(3)
array([1.49166815e-154, 1.49166815e-154, 1.48219694e-323])
Creating a Numpy array of type int
np.empty(3, int)
array([2305843009213693952, 2305843009213693952, 3])
Creating a two-dimensional Numpy array
Using a tuple
np.empty((2,3), int)
array([[0, 0, 0], [0, 0, 0]])
Using an array:
np.empty([2,3], int)
array([[0, 0, 0], [0, 0, 0]])
