Numpy's flip(~)
method reverses the ordering of the elements along the given axis. Note that this method does not flip bits (i.e. turns 0s into 1s, and 1s into 0s).
Parameters
1. a
| array-like
The array on which to perform the method.
2. axis
| int
or tuple<int>
| optional
The axis along which to perform the flip. By default, axis=None
.
Return value
A Numpy array with the specified axis reversed.
Examples
Flipping a flattened array
To reverse a flattened array:
np.flip([1,2,3])
array([3, 2, 1])
Flipping a 2D array
To flip a 2D array:
np.flip([[1,2,3], [4,5,6], [7,8,9]])
array([[9, 8, 7], [6, 5, 4], [3, 2, 1]])
Notice how the last value, 9
, in the original array became the first element in the flipped array, the second-to-last value, 8
, became the second element, and so on.
Flipping a 2D array column-wise
Simply provide the argument axis=0
, like follows:
np.flip([[1,2,3], [4,5,6], [7,8,9]], axis=0)
array([[7, 8, 9], [4, 5, 6], [1, 2, 3]])
Flipping a 2D array row-wise
Simply provide the argument axis=1
, like follows:
np.flip([[1,2,3], [4,5,6], [7,8,9]], axis=1)
array([[3, 2, 1], [6, 5, 4], [9, 8, 7]])
